Our Founder
Dr. Michael W. Emmerich
Dr. Michael W. Emmerich was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota and moved with his parents to Carrington as a young boy. After graduating from high school in Carrington, he attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks before pursuing his Doctor of Optometry degree at the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, graduating in 1969.
Upon returning to Grand Forks, Dr. Emmerich joined forces with Dr. Calvin Rustad, Dr. Loren Hendrickson, and Dr. Quentin Haroldson to establish Valley Vision Clinic on the south end of Grand Forks. The clinic opened its doors on April 1, 1970, and Dr. Emmerich dedicated his career there until his retirement on April 21, 2015. Shortly after retiring, he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and passed away on June 17, 2015.
In his will, Dr. Emmerich established the MWE Scholarship Fund to provide educational opportunities for financially needy students from Grand Forks and Carrington, North Dakota. He firmly believed that obtaining a post-secondary education was of utmost importance—whether one aspired to be an accountant, doctor, plumber, electrician, or cosmetologist.
Dr. Emmerich believed that everyone deserves the opportunity to develop skills that lead to financial independence. Though he never had a family of his own, he left behind a remarkable legacy—a gift that continues to transform lives and open doors for students in need.
Our History
A Legacy of Supporting Education
The MWE Scholarship Fund was established in 2015 through the generous bequest of Dr. Michael W. Emmerich. What began as one man's vision to help students in his community has grown into a meaningful organization that continues to honor his legacy.
Since our founding, we have helped numerous students from Grand Forks, East Grand Forks, and Carrington achieve their educational goals, staying true to Dr. Emmerich's belief that financial barriers should never stand in the way of academic potential.
